Comments of the winner of “Young neurosurgeons competition-2015” on the visit to Japan.
The winner of an annual Competition of young neurosurgeons became Natalia P.Denisova.
Dr.Denisova tells the following about her visit to Japan:
“I was the winner of the “Competition of young neurosurgeons-2015” and was awarded with 2-weeks training in neurosurgical division of Tokyo Women’s Medical University. The training lasted from May 9 till May 20 under the guidance of the Head of Functional Neurosurgery Group, Professor Takaomi Taira. During the training I had an opportunity to participate in clinical discussions and rounds, outpatients’ receptions and surgical procedures. Professor Taira is world-known person thanks to his exceptional destructive and neuromodulation operations in patients with movement disorders (essential tremor, Parkinson’s disease, dystonias, etc.). He deals with treatment of such rare pathology as dystonia of musicians and writers’ spasm (so called task-specific dystonia). In his operation theater one can see how a patient plays musical instrument during surgical procedure to estimate immediate effect from thalamo- and pallidotomy. Besides, functional neurosurgery group widely deals with different types of spasticity, including children with cerebral palsy. In this type of pathology the patients are offered peripheral neurotomy or the doctors implant baclofen pump. I had a chance to see various destructive surgical procedures on thalamus and pallidum in cases of focal dystonia and also peripheral neurotomy in cases of dystonic torticollis.
On May 20-22 I have visit Annual Conference of Japanese Neurosurgeons that was held in Osaka (text and slides of all reports were also in English).
I was really impressed by diligence, fairness and high professionalism of Japanese doctors and scientists and I think that my training was very successful and fruitful. Besides, Japan is a very beautiful, modern, advanced country where it’s a great pleasure to stay!”
Start of “Competition of young neurosurgeons-2016” will be announced in October 2016, applications will be accepted up to December 2016. Training in a famous hospital will traditionally be the main prize.
